Preparing Yourself for the Challenges of E-commerce

Opening up an e-commerce retail website can be exciting. In addition, with the proper planning, an e-commerce business can be extremely profitable. Statistics prove that e-commerce websites had a 13% increase in overall sales last year, equaling $289 billion. There are plenty of people looking to take advantage of this uptick in e-commerce interest and there are plenty of ways in which an individual or business can do this. However, there are a few things that need to be kept in mind.

The first thing to remember, and something that many people who work in traditional retail locations can attest to, the customer should always be right. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always mean the customer is going to be polite. E-commerce, like any other type of retail business, is a customer service orientated business. It’s always important to make sure that the customer’s needs are front and center. However, not every customer will appreciate this type of attention and it certainly won’t impede some customers from being impolite. Understanding this reality may help things to go easier when an e-commerce business has to deal with an unhappy or rude customer.

One of the frustrations that many e-commerce companies have is that carriers lose packages. It’s something that is frustrating, but it is also something that needs to be expected. Most e-commerce retailers will find that the majority of packages lost are during the months of November through December. Much like an unpleasant customer, it’s frustrating, and there is little that can be done about it. Unfortunately, it just part of doing business.

Lastly, its important to remember that there is always fraud. Small e-commerce retailers may not think that fraudulent individuals would care much about a small company. However, these are the types of companies that criminals target. They don’t think smaller companies are very savvy and won’t be able to spot fraud. Having increased fraud detection is important, but always remember, if an individual or company is in the e-commerce business, they will be a victim of fraud at one point or another.

E-commerce is an exciting venture, but it isn’t always easy. Understanding these challenges can help a business to take steps to prevent these problems from happening too often. In addition, knowing that these problems will happen can help a business better cope with the frustration and move on.
